The Brotherhood of the Virginia Zeta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon is deeply wounded by the events of Monday, April 16th, and would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their fathers, sons and daughters in this senseless act of violence. We would also like to express our thanks to all of the chapters of both SAE and other fraternities across the United States who have emailed and called us, expressing condolences. Your support has been much appreciated and is a testament to the bonds of brotherhood that lay across the Greek Community.
We also want to publicly recognize Brother Zach Petkewicz, who has recounted his story on several national news programs regarding the action he took in Norris Hall on April 16th. He heard the shots and screams and a classmate saw the gunman approaching their classroom. Zach lead other classmates in a successful effort to barricade the door using tables. The gunman fired shots through the door and partially came through, but Zach and two other classmates forced the gunman back into the hallway. Realizing entry was unlikely, he moved on. Soon after, the police entered and cornered the suspect, who, in a final act of cowardice, took his own life.
The relief the chapter felt after learning of Zach’s safety is unspeakable. While Zach is reluctant to accept praise, his actions and the actions of his classmates saved numerous lives. We want to publicly acknowledge how proud we are of him; we’ve heard many times the lines “whose self-control is equal to all emergencies,” and Zach is living testament to John Walter Wayland’s words. His ability to control his own fear saved not only his life, but also the lives of his classmates.
We have decided to post these comments due to the large number of calls and emails we have received from brothers of SAE, other Greeks, members of the Virginia Tech community and members of the press. We realize the depth of this story, but ask that the media respect Zach, acknowledge the trauma he has experienced, and give him the space to open up as he feels capable.
The search for meaning and understanding from Monday’s tragedy will continue for a long time, and it is difficult to see any good in the presence of such unspeakable evil. However, Zach Petkewicz’s heroism, and the heroism of his classmates and others serve as inspiration to us all during these sad times.
Again, we appreciate the expressions of sympathy we’ve received, and continue to mourn the loss of our peers and hope that the families of those lost will find a sustainable peace.

What an example you have set for all of us. As a Virginian, a Tech alum, and a Virginia Zeta brother, I look forward to having the chance to meet you, shake your hand and thank you. My sadness at having known one of the victims is now tempered by the pride of being connected with one of the heroes. Well done, brother.
I wish you and all your classmates peace in this difficult time. Lean on each other, and let some good come of this in the form of the unshatterable bonds you will form.

Needless to say, we were concerned about all the well-being of all of the Virginia Tech students. However, we were especially relieved to hear that all of the SAE’s were okay.
I’m so sorry you all have to experience such a severe loss. Nothing can completely take away the horrible feelings; however, one of the benefits to being an SAE is being your Brother’s Keeper to each other. Don’t be afraid to reach out to each other, your parents, and others during this time of tragedy and healing.
Zach, you demonstrated the teachings of “The True Gentleman.” You are an inspiration to all of us and we are truly proud of you.
Best wishes and Phi Alpha to all of you!

Zack,
Over the past days, the entire Nation has cried with you. I am in Florida and it’s all we speak of down here. We are shocked. We are wounded. We send you and all of V tech our love as brothers and sisters of this world together. We are in this together and we hope you know you’re not alone.
I know you’re confused. I know you hurt in unspeakable ways. And when you explained what happened, I know you don’t feel like a hero. I know. And your reaction to hide was absolutely appropriate and healthy. That’s what we all would have done. But that you acted in the face of mortal fear cam from an unparalleled courage. And later to recount with humbleness and wet eyes was a MAN. I will never forget you. You are the epitomize of what we should all strive to be- although you may not ever understand that. Be well dear. Thank you for all you have done, and all that you are.

It was great reading and hearing about the heroics of a fellow SAE. While it was a tragedy that struck Virginia Tech, it is always a relief to hear that lives were saved by quick action and quick thinking, for without you and your fellow classmates actions more lives would have been lost. You define what a real “True Gentleman” is by acting on the words that we all speak.

Zach, I’ve always found that the true heroes amongst us often resist being labeled as such; which is likely due, in part, to an extraordinarily large sense of humility. As I watched this atrocity happen, and then witnessed your responses to what seemed to be endless questions about your bravery, I was reminded of the following phrase: “..Who is himself humbled before necessity compels him to humble another.”
In your actions, you showed phenomenal bravery. In your words and sentiments expressed afterwards, you showed true heroism. I’m proud and humbled to call you a brother. Thank you, and Phi Alpha Zach.

Gentlemen,
I know it has been some time since the events of April have passed us. To this day, it is hard for me to comprehend the senselessness of that horrific day. I came into town shortly after and stood on the drillfield in awe of all of the memorials. I was moved to tears when thoughts filled my mind as to what it would have been like if it had been one of us I was mourning for.
Zach, your actions made me speechless. I am proud to call you a brother and I am thankful you were composed to handle the situation as you did.
I hope each of you make the most of every day at Virginia Tech and leave there knowing you have no regrets.

Ryan Clark is a true hero and his last name is not African (his ancestors took the name from a landowner). Zach Petkewicz is a Polish-American hero and he is like the Casimir Pulaski of Virginia Tech. Liviu Librescu gave his life to save others and his family was decimated by the orders of the uncle of William Patrick Stuart-Houston. Waleed Shaalan is a hero of Egyptian origin and he is the only Muslim to die in the shootings. Trey Perkins is a stormin Norman (his last name is from Norman origin due to his name from Pierre de Morlais), Derek O’Dell (his middle name is Jefferson due to Thomas Jefferson’s birthday), Katelyn Carney, and Erin Sheehan are true heroes saving many lives. Kevin Granata is the Italian-American hero gave his life to save many others. Jocelyn Couture-Nowak, a Quebecois heroine gave her life and Partahi Lumbatouran, an Indonesian Christian gave his life as well, Henry Jake Lee, formerly known as Henh P. Ly, a Vietnamese-American gave their lives so they could live much longer.
June 4, 2009 at 10:37 pm
Actually, it seems possible that Zach Petkewicz might be Lithuanian or Polish (if he is, he is the Gediminas or Casimir Pulaski or Thaddeus Kosciusko of Virginia Tech) due to the original spelling, Petkevicius.
October 1, 2009 at 7:22 pm
Zach Petkewicz is still alive and he is around to celebrate the 1000th anniversary of the name Lithuania.
